On May 7, the first set of the vehicle dynamic response detection system for heavy-haul railways in China was put into use on Shuohuang Railway, so as to achieve "the detection-based repair" to accurately maintain the rail surface.

The transportation volume of Shuohuang Railway has been increasing year by year, with the number of 20000-tonne heavy-haul trains increasing. The short train interval and the heavy train density lead to the increasing frequency of the train wheels’ impact on the rail surface, which accelerates the deterioration of rail surface and makes rail surface unsmooth. The accumulated minor defects on the rail surface would damage the quality of the entire rail line structural components and the track, shortening the service life of the rail and endangering the driving safety.

Through accurate detection and analysis, the vehicle dynamic response detection system can realize both qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the rail surface damage, identify the defects on the rail surface in a timely manner, make rail repair plans based on data, effectively conduct rapid and general survey of rail surface damage, and flexibly coordinate with rail grinding and milling machines, which can save the on-site inspection workload of 150 people per day.

In addition, the detection system has changed the traditional management mode of "experience-based repair" and "periodic repair", realizing "precise repair" and "condition-based repair", effectively improving the efficiency of rail grinding and milling operations, and providing technical support in "reducing costs and increasing efficiency" for rail maintenance.
