Recently, the project titled “R&D and Application of a Safety Early Warning System for Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers Based on Visual Imaging and Multi-Source Information Fusion” by Huanghua Harbour Shanghang Dredging Company was assessed to reach the international advanced level by the High-Tech Industry Association of Hebei Province.
As the major vessel type in dredging operations, trailing suction hopper dredgers primarily operate in shallow waters such as port areas and waterways. The unique working environment of these vessels poses safety risks, including external waterborne and underwater hazards as well as unsafe behaviors by crew members, threatening the safe operation of the ships. The project is established with situational awareness-based advanced visual technologies as its foundation and AI-based vision applications as its core. Designed specifically for the characteristics of trailing suction hopper dredgers, the system integrates image processing, deep learning-based perception, and multi-source data fusion to deliver key functionalities, including visualized safety assistance for waterway dredging, enhanced visibility in low-light conditions, monitoring of dredging equipment posture, detection of crew violations, and overboard identification. This innovative system enables vessels to achieve visible, clear, comprehensive, and understandable perception. The system has an identification range of up to 6.85 kilometers and a visual detection accuracy of 98.5%, substantially strengthening the early warning capability of safety risk for dredging vessels and ensuring safe and efficient operations.
