Recently, the 18th Yulin International Coal and High-end Energy Chemical Industry Expo has been convened. During the Expo, the China Economic Information Service (CEIS) and the Institute of Emergency Management and National Security of China University of Mining and Technology jointly released the National Typical Cases for Multi-governance in Mine Ecological Restoration (2024) and held an awarding ceremony for the enterprises with selected cases. Shendong Coal’s Halagou Holistic and Systematic Project of the Conservation and Management of “Mountains, Waters, Forests, Farmlands, Lakes, Grasslands and Deserts” was recognized as one of the exemplary cases for its outstanding achievements in mine ecological restoration.

In recent years, Shendong Coal has given top priority to mine ecological restoration and governance as its high-quality development strategy, adopting tailored approaches to improve ecological governance. The construction of the Halagou Ecological Demonstration Base began with the ecological governance of 72-square-kilometer coal-mine fields and subsidence zones, and focused on comprehensive improvement for land reclamation, sea buckthorn economic forest, industrial development, and ecological multi-governance demonstration for mountains, waters, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands and deserts of mines with remarkable progress. Currently, a 20-square-kilometer sea buckthorn economic forest and a seven-square-kilometer comprehensive demonstration zone have been established, boosting vegetation coverage from 3% to over 64%. The plant community structure has seen remarkable progress with species diversity growing from 16 to over 100 and microbial and animal populations also have increased, improving the ecological environment and transforming the former desert landscape into a thriving “oasis”.

Mine ecological restoration plays a crucial part of ecological conservation and a necessary step towards the construction of a beautiful China. The release of National Typical Cases for Multi-governance in Mine Ecological Restoration (2024) highlights 12 exemplary cases across various dimensions, including technological innovation, management upgrades, and capital empowerment, to set a benchmark in mine ecological restoration and enhance the image of China’s mine ecological governance. Shendong Halagou Ecological Demonstration Base’s selection as a typical case underscores the company’s innovative practices and exceptional contributions to mine ecological restoration and also offers valuable insights and replicable experiences for the industry.
