The winners of the sixth China Grand Awards for Industry were released in Beijing on December 27, 2020. The research and demonstration project of 8.8-meter ultra-high intelligent long wall face equipment carried out by Shendong Coal won the grand award, a top honor for industry in China.

Shendong Coal entered into the list together with other leading Chinese companies like China Academy of Space Technology which implements China’s major aerospace programs including manned space flight, space exploration and Beidou Navigation Satellite System. Shendong Coal was the only coal company winning the honor. The successful implementation of the project marks that the domestic technologies are capable of mining super-high seam, a major breakthrough in coal mining. Compared with peer coal producers, Shendong Coal’s new equipment system boasts the world’s most advanced mining technology for underground mining, domestically-developed mining equipment, the most intelligent operation system, the safest performance and globally leading technical indicators. It also helps improve cross-industry coordination and green production. While supporting energy safety, the project boosts high-quality development of the mining industry and economic growth in west China, as well as improve regional environmental quality and generates social benefits.

With the approval of the State Council, China Grand Awards for Industry was initiated in 2004 to recognize outstanding projects in various industrial areas in China. Dubbed the “Oscar” of China’s industry, it represents the development path, goals and ethos of China’s industrialization. Apart from the Grand Awards, there are also awards of honorable mention and nominations for the Awards. Organized by China Federation of Industrial Economics and other 13 national industry associations, the Grand Awards are issued every two years. The most recent Grand Awards went to 16 companies and 14 projects, the honorable mention to 12 companies and 21 projects, and the nominations to 14 companies and 16 projects.

New situations, new development and new guiding principles were taken into consideration in the review and selection of candidates for the sixth Grand Awards. Winners were honored for their outstanding achievements in independent innovation, integration of industrialization and IT application, coordinated development of the industrial chains, high-quality supplies and the fight against the epidemic. In particular, they contributed to solving bottleneck problems in key areas and developed a set of approaches in business transformation, brand building, green development, opening up and cooperative development based on experiences.
